- The Science: Uva Ursi contains a compound called arbutin. When you ingest it, it travels through your digestive system and ends up in your bladder. Once it is in the acidic environment of the urine, it converts into hydroquinone, which is a powerful, natural antiseptic that kills UTI-causing bacteria.
- The Catch: Hydroquinone is tough on the liver. Medical herbalists strictly warn that Uva Ursi should never be taken for more than 5 to 7 days at a time. If you take it long-term, it can cause liver toxicity.
